WELCOME TO ENERGY SCHOOL!
Here we will cover the topics of climate change, energy efficiency and renewable energy -three important yet complex issues that will help you make the best decisions for your hotel!
HOTELS & ENERGY
There are great opportunities for the hotel sector to save on operational costs by taking advantage of the potential of energy efficiency and renewable energies. About 40% of the energy used by hotels is electricity, and 60% comes from natural gas and oil fuels.
Three-quarters of this energy is used for:
- Space heating
- Hot water production
- Air conditioning and ventilation
These are all uses where energy efficiency can be increased dramatically, and where renewable energies can also be easily harnessed by use of simple, proven technologies.
Human quality of life and productivity relies on secure, affordable and sustainable energy. As economies expand and the world population continues to grow, energy demand is increasing worldwide. Currently, 80% of the world energy supply comes from fossil fuels (coal, petrol and natural gas) which emit greenhouse gases causing climate change and other negative environmental impacts. Fossil fuels are finite and non-renewable, and their reserves are decreasing faster than new ones are being formed.
Energy consumption by hotels has a major environmental impact. Hotels are among the top five types of buildings in the service sector for energy consumption, below food, sales and health care facilities. Europe has the world’s largest hotel stock with approximately 5.45 million hotel rooms – nearly half of the world’s total.
It is now internationally recognised that the world must dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions by decreasing its use of fossil fuels. The hotel sector can contribute by becoming more energy efficient and increasing its use of renewable energy technologies. Hotel Energy Solutions will help the sector achieve this and show that energy efficiency also enables cost reductions and enhanced competitiveness.
